And as the years have gone by I want more of the clarity and the simplification, especially in dealing with figures … I have this need to paint people and paint things in general. In a way, for the past three years, finally it’s coming into focus. And it’s a very pleasing, very thrilling and a very scary kind of situation because it’s starting to take form. I’m getting rid of a lot of the excess baggage, a lot of old ideas about what works and what doesn’t, what art is … And I’ve been getting down to painting things clearly that are important to me, which are usually incidences, either symbolic or literal, that have happened in my own life and experience. And doing it without … the trappings, and the fancy paint work. Not to say there isn’t a response to the materials. There’s a definite tactile thing … There’s a speed to enamel and it’s right there, you have it. If you’re particularly impatient, it’s [a] great medium. You don’t have to add oil, you don’t have to add thinner. If you’re brushing, you can put it on and it’s right there. You can take it off if you don’t like it. But nevertheless, it’s sensual. I like the look; I like the smell … So yes, that is important. I don’t mean to say I’m just doing the imagery and that’s all I care about. No. I like the two things to go hand in hand. I like to be brought back to the fact that this, after all, is only paint on canvas, aside from the other things that go on.
